Taken from Wiki: In Norse mythology, Huginn (from Old Norse “thought”[1]) and Muninn (Old Norse “memory”[2] or “mind”[3]) are a pair of ravens that fly all over the world, Miðgarðr, and bring information to the god Odin. Huginn and Muninn are attested in the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources: the Prose Edda and Heimskringla, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson; in the Third Grammatical Treatise, compiled in the 13th century by Óláfr Þórðarson; and in the poetry of skalds.

I’ve finally been able to work a full day at the studio! So I am finishing up some long overdue sculptures. Here lies Muninn: Memory. I’ve added feather patterns, patched some holes, and am now about to build the first mould for Pate de Verre.

2 cups of plaster/silica powder with 1 cup of cold water. Nitrile gloves on, half face respirator on- I slowly hand mix the water and powder until it is similar in consistency to kefir. 🙂 Then I take some and carefully smooth it over the wax form. You could use a paint brush for this step, but I find my fingers work just as well if not better. The wax wants to resist the investment at first.

Once the first layer has almost set-up I start to mix another batch of investment. This time I am using plaster silica mixed with grog. The grog adds strength to the outer mould. I also add fibreglass or dry wall bandages as I add the investment to the first layer.

With this mould I could easily pull out the wax model, and possibly even re-use it. But I am just a little wary of wall breakage so- no. Steam, baby!

Ok so, I thought I’d show ya what it looks like when you start to steam out the wax. Once this process is complete the mould will be clean. I intend to first sift black glass powder into the mould to pick up all the feather detailing, then gradually pack down fine frit mixed with gum arabic and distilled water. I will add images of the glass paste process soon. Thanks for stopping by! Any questions? Please feel free to ask in the comments below 🙂

Ciao for now!

Hi Tosca, interesting, I saw these two dudes yesterday, they were making noise and flying about, walking along the street as Nico and I went walking, I ask them why when two minutes before the sun was shining – why was it now gray, rain turning to sleet and snow flakes? sound like they said “your in Colorado” they were looking for scraps before the snow covered everything – wow, last week a blizzard you wouldn’t imagine – lots of biggggg tree branches broke, the street lamp, snow so deep we couldn’t see past our front door – then the 28th was all sunshine – crazy – nice work Lady Love and Light, Auntie A
